Anita S. and Pat L. from Seattle Mennonite Church will join 13 other volunteers for a work camp in Burundi. When the team arrives in Burundi, their 15 members will be matched by 13 THARS (Trauma Healing and Reconciliation Services) staff volunteers from Burundi plus 2 members from a new peace church in eastern DRCongo. Together, they will construct a parking lot and two large gardens for sustainable foods. They’re bringing 1400 packets of suitable seeds. One of the gardens will be at a local elementary school, where students who participate will receive seed packets and encouragement, together with their families, to plant their own gardens.
For 8 days they’ll also run an afternoon day camp for a lot of at-risk kids (homeless, abused, extremely poor and some former child soldiers). A lunch, fun activities learning English and teams participating in small service projects are included in the program.
They’re taking along 20 soccer balls for local schools, 2 basket balls, 100′ of good skipping rope, a new laptop computer, several thousand dollars of grant money and much more. Mostly they’re going to be among local people, receive the gift of their culture and hospitality and share together the love of God as we build human bonds across cultures, race, economic differences, generations and gender. Please hold the team in your prayers.
